چکیده

Motivated by the direct numerical simulation of particulate flow (i.e., of the motion of fluid-particle mixtures) the authors of this paper, with the assistance of several collaborators, have introduced some years ago a computational methodology based on a fictitious domain formulation involving distributed Lagrange multipliers defined over the particles; this approach allows the flow computations to be done on a fixed space region of simple shape, giving thus to the practitioners the possibility of very fast solvers to treat, for example, the diffusion and the incompressibility if we assume that the fluid is viscous and incompressible. The above methodology will be briefly discussed in the next section and then applied to the direct simulations of the fluidization of 1204 identical rigid solid spherical particles contained in a “bed” of simple shape and of the sedimentation of 6400 disks in a 2D rectangular box. For more details on the methodology briefly discussed in this paper and for further numerical results obtained with it see [GHJ97, GPH98, PGH98, GPHJ99, GPH99, Pan99].

Numerical Simulation of Sediment Distribution and Transmission in Pre-Sedimentation basins Using FV Method and Comparison with the Experimental Results

Pre-sedimentation basins are among the most important elements of the conventional water treatment process. In pre-sedimentation basins, due to different velocity gradients, secondary and rotational flows are formed that will create short paths and increase dead and still flow zones as well as changes in the flow mixing. This will prevent laminar flow conditions for sedimentation and will reduc...

Evaluation of Eulerian Two-Fluid Numerical Method for the Simulation of Heat Transfer in Fluidized Beds

Accurate modeling of fluidization and heat transfer phenomena in gas-solid fluidized beds is not solely dependent  on the particular selected numerical model and involved algorithms. In fact, choosing the right model for each specific operating condition, the correct implementation of each model, and the right choice of parameters and boundary conditions, determine the accuracy of the results i...

Direct Numerical Simulation of Fluidization of 1204 Spheres

One goal pursued there is to demonstrate that numerical experiments on fluidization can be processed in log-log plots for straight lines leading to power laws as did Richardson and Zaki 1954 for real experiments. As far as we know, we are the only group of researchers to carry out this program. There is no prior literature, in which power laws are obtained from numerical experiments. On the oth...

Mathematical model and numerical simulation of the liquid fluidization of polydisperse solid particle mixtures

A mathematical model for the fluidization of polydisperse suspensions is developed. The stationary concentration configurations for a given fluidizing velocity are analyzed and a mixing condition for bed inversion is derived. A central finite difference scheme is applied to the simulation of the fluidization of a bidisperse suspension. The numerical simulations agree with the experimentally rep...

Influence of intake’s angel and location on sediment rate in bend of river using CCHE2D software

Investigating the features and flow behavior and related component is one of the complex phenomena that make using of software inevitable. The rivers carry sediment content along with water which is created by erosion of riverbed sediment and erosion caused by rainfall or surface runoff flowing over the catchment area. If the action of river dewatering occurs, the entry of sediment into the int...
